Inside Renault Sport Trophy #1
The World Series by Renault kicks off this weekend at Spa-Francorchamps with the first Renault Sport Trophy season. This discipline, which will showcase the Renault Sport R.S. 01, features six meetings over three races.
Each team is composed of an internationally renowned professional "Elite" driver and a less-experienced amateur "Prestige" category driver.
The Renault Sport Trophy is placed under the sporting supervision of the FIA, and as such is enjoys the title of "International Series sanctioned by the FIA."
The weekend programme for the Renault Sport Trophy
Each Renault Sport Trophy meeting comprises three races :
1 "endurance" race (60 to 90 minutes + 1 lap)
2 25-minute sprint races, one for Elite drivers and one for Prestige drivers.
Qualifications are divided into two sessions, one for each driver category. The standings at the end of each session will determine the starting order for the sprint races.
The endurance race grid depends on the Prestige qualifying standings from the "odd" meetings (Spa, Silverstone, Le Mans) and the Elite standings from the "even" meetings (Hungaroring, Nürburgring, Jerez). The starting driver is the one who qualified the car.
There will be a compulsory pitstop to change drivers, giving teams a chance to discuss and revamp their strategy in their quest for the podium !
All races will be broadcast on Motors TV. A magazine will also be published after each event.
Four titles for the taking
The Renault Sport Trophy includes four standings : Elite, Prestige, Endurance and Teams. The event uses the FIA points system (25, 18, 15, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2 and 1 point(s) for the top ten drivers).
The Elite standings are obtained by adding the points earned by each driver during the Elite sprint races to the points from the intermediate standings from the endurance races in which the Elite drivers started. The principle is the same for determining the Prestige standings.
At the end of the season, the Elite winner will receive a complete training programme (including physical training, simulator, media training and more) to prepare for a rookie test with Nismo’s Super GT team in Japan.
The Prestige champion will win an exceptional prize : an entry to participate in the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans at the wheel of an LMP2 prototype !
