Carlos Sainz : “I’ve got respect for my rivals”

Driving on home soil this weekend, Carlos Sainz (DAMS) gave his fans a win to celebrate in Saturday’s Formula Renault 3.5 Series race. After following up with a fourth place in Sunday’s race, the Spaniard leaves Motorland Aragón as the championship leader. Naturally enough, he was a happy man when we caught up with him.

You were driving at home this weekend. Who did you fear going into it ?
“I don’t fear any of my rivals, but I do have respect for them. I’m taking part in the most competitive championship just underneath Formula 1 and I respect everyone.”

How do you prepare for meetings ?
“I spend two days at Le Mans with DAMS and I go to England for a day’s work on a simulator. Then I arrive at the circuit, where I just do my normal preparation for a race weekend. That’s what I do every time and all that hard work pays off.”

What’s your relationship with your father like ?
“I like to have him by my side. He lets me be myself, though he always tries to help me. It doesn’t matter what the competition is – having a world champion next to me helps me see the attitude I need to have to be a champion myself.”

Where do you see yourself in ten years’ time ?
“With a girlfriend, though maybe still a bit too young to have children ! My dream is to be in Formula One, maybe with a title or two. I know it won’t be easy, but I really want to get there and that’s what I’m working towards.”

Have you felt the support of the home fans here ?
“The support from Spain and all my fans has been incredible, and I’m delighted I’ve been able to give them a victory. I’m very aware that they’ve made the effort to come to Motorland to support a 19-year-old guy who hasn’t achieved anything yet. It’s a massive gesture on their part.”

Name a song you’d like to listen to now ?
“I like a little bit of everything, though usually I listen to hip-hop, rap and dance. If you played me any of those three things right now, I’d be happy.”

Let’s take photo that shows how you’re feeling right now.
