Max Verstappen discovers the World Series by Renault
Max Verstappen’s first meeting in the World Series by Renault - at the wheel of both the Infiniti Red Bull-Renault and the Renault Sport R.S. 01 - was an exciting one. Between races, the young prodigy from team Toro Rosso Max carved out a few minutes to answer a few of our questions.
Two years ago you were in karting, last year in a single-seater and today in Formula 1. How do you feel about joining a formula promotion ?
It’s always great to participate in such an important event, to be part of a Formula Renault 3.5 Series race in such a powerful car - and especially on the Spa-Francorchamps track. It’s one of the best tracks in the world in my opinion. The energy in the paddock is really amazing with all the spectators.

This is your first time here at the World Series by Renault. What do you think ?
Everything is open, there are loads of activities for the spectators, you can come out and watch the races but also check out all the attractions at the Renault Village. You can get a close-up look at the drivers and teams working, which isn’t possible in other series.
You tested the Formula Renault 2.0 for nearly a whole year and posted spectacular results in the rookie tests at the end of the 2013 season. How much did the 2.0 contribute to learning to get a handle on single-seater racing ?
I was just getting started with single-seater racing and the car was great for learning. I think it’s such an important experience for drivers coming out of karting.
Do you have any special memories of the Spa-Francorchamps track ? Any particular significance for you ?
Last year, I won three races here ! So that’s a great memory for me, especially since it was here on a track that feels like my home turf.
You wanted to be a Formula 1 driver since you were a kid. But if that hadn’t worked out, what would you have done instead ?
I can’t imagine my life without racing - so I guess I’d say motorcycles !

You had the chance to drive the Renault Sport R.S. 01 for a few laps for the first time this weekend. What are your first impressions ?
I really like it. The car was great to drive - I was surprised by the aerodynamic downforce and can’t wait to drive it again today. The traction in the quick corners is really impressive. 31/05/2015
