Vaxiviere scores second pole at Spa
Third overall, Matthieu Vaxiviere (Lotus) scored his second pole position of the season with a 1:58.768 finish. The Lotus F1 Team Junior driver posted the fastest time to beat out Dutchman Beitske Visser (AVF). The female racer then lost all her times for a non conformity on the checked position concerning the position of the flat bottom. Canadian Nicholas Latifi (Arden Motorsport) will line up in the first row, followed by series leader Jazeman Jaafar (Fortec Motorsports) and Oliver Rowland (Fortec Motorsports).
The first session got off to an exciting start. Oliver Rowland (Fortec Motorsports) was the first driver to clock in a sub-two minute lap, but he was quickly topped by Matthieu Vaxiviere (Lotus). Drivers switched to new tyres in the last ten minutes, but the session was disrupted by two stoppages caused by Egor Orudzhev (Arden Motorsport) and Tom Dillmann (Jagonya Ayam with Carlin).
Jazeman Jaafar took the wheel just before the finish, but Matthieu Vaxiviere improved right away, securing pole at 1:58.768 ahead of Beitske Visser, before the Dutch racer was excluded due to a non conformity on the checked position concerning the position of the flat bottom. Nicholas Latifi and Fortec Motorsports drivers Jazeman Jaafar and Oliver Rowland will follow the Frenchman. The McLaren Young Driver Development Programme’s Nyck de Vries (DAMS) will be fifth and the best placed rookie on the grid.
The first Formula Renault 3.5 Series race will start at 3.10pm.
Matthieu Vaxiviere : “It was quite a complicated session. With the two red flags after the new tyres switch, we only had one lap to get pole. I managed to put a lap together, but the hardest is yet to come. We need to put together a whole race !"
