Season 11 of the World Series by Renault got off to the best possible start in Spain, raising the curtain on an exciting year ahead for the competitors in the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0, the Formula Renault 3.5 Series and the Renault Sport Trophy, which will make its appearance at Spa-Francorchamps.
With drivers from a dozen countries taking part this year, the World Series by Renault has shown once again that it is a truly international event. Switzerland’s Louis Delétraz (Josef Kaufmann Racing) kicked off his Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 campaign in the best possible style by winning the first two races, while British driver Oliver Rowland (Fortec Motorsport) opened his Formula Renault 3.5 Series account with a victory. Two men determined to push them hard in the battle for the two titles are Norway’s Dennis Olsen (Manor MP Motorsport), who won Sunday’s Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 race in the wet, and French driver Matthieu Vaxivière (Lotus), who scored a memorable triumph in the second Formula Renault 3.5 race of the weekend.
Those performances were followed closely by Carlos Sainz Jr, who himself won here 12 months ago. The Formula One driver and reigning Formula Renault 3.5 Series champion lit up the track at Motorland Aragon in the Infiniti Red Bull Racing F1 car before putting the Renault Sport R.S. 01 through its paces, to the delight of the 50,000 fans, who share the same passion for motorsport as the Spanish ace. There was plenty happening off the track too, with the unveiling of the new Renault Espace in the Renault Village, alongside the new Clio and Mégane ranges. All in all, it proved a bright and colourful launch, one celebrated by the all-new World Series by Renault Dancing Show.
WSR returns in Monaco on 24 May for the Formula Renault 3.5 Series.
