Starting from pole, Alex Peroni (MP Motorsport) dominated race one of the Formula Renault Eurocup in Monaco to become the sixth different winner in seven races this season. Accompanied by rookie Charles Milesi (R-ace GP) and Renault Sport Academy driver Victor Martins (R-ace GP) on the podium, the Australian received his trophy from Renault Sport Racing Managing Director, Cyril Abiteboul.

On Friday, Alex Peroni won the pole for the Saturday race in posting best time in the first group on track. The Australian lined up on the grid ahead of Charles Milesi, Victor Martins, Yifei Ye (Josef Kaufmann Racing) and Christian Lundgaard (MP Motorsport).

Perfect start for Peroni

With a clean start off the line, Alex Peroni quickly pulled away from the rest of the field. While the top five remained unchanged, Lorenzo Colombo (JD Motorsport) was overtaken by Neil Verhagen (Tech 1 Racing), Max Defourny (MP Motorsport) and Max Fewtrell (R-ace GP), while his team mate Thomas Maxwell (JD Motorsport) took tenth place from Logan Sargeant (R-ace GP). Meanwhile, Thomas Neubauer (Tech 1 Racing) and Arthur Rougier (Fortec Motorsports) returned to the pits on lap one to change their damaged front-wings.

An intense fight for the points

While Alex Peroni comfortably ran out front, Charles Milesi had to fend off Victor Martins, as did Yifei Ye, who was under threat from Christian Lundgaard.

Max Defourny and Neil Verhagen were in a heated battle as well. After a double contact, the Belgian driver got by the American member of the Red Bull Junior Team in the tunnel to take sixth place on lap 10. Slowed by his damaged front-wing, Max Defourny had to resist the hard-charging trio of Neil Verhagen, Max Fewtrell and Thomas Maxwell.

Alex Peroni went on for the win and the largest margin of victory so far this season. Charles Milesi was second ahead of Victor Martins, who claimed his first podium result in the category. The leader in the general classification, Yifei Ye finished in front of his closet championship rival Christian Lundgaard. Sixth place went to Neil Verhagen, who was followed by Max Fewtrell, Thomas Maxwell and Max Defourny, while Logan Sargeant rounded out the top ten and picked up the final point on offer after surprising Lorenzo Colombo.

Quotes

Alex Peroni (MP Motorsport) : “It is awesome to win in Monaco ! It was already great in Pau, but this is another level ! I think I drove the perfect race. The start was the most important moment and mine was perfect. The car was really good. It let me attack while staying within the limits. Then, all I had to do was maintain the gap. After my difficult start to the season, I want to thank my team and everyone who is supporting me. I hope we can keep the momentum going.”

Charles Milesi (R-ace GP) : “Just finishing is already a good thing, but it is even better to do it in finishing second ! I got a decent start, but I struggled to find a good rhythm after the first lap. I made a lot of mistakes and I was looking too much in my mirrors. Even though Victor was faster and more consistent than me, I tried to manage the situation. I knew that he couldn’t really try anything. Tomorrow afternoon, I will have a clear track ahead of me from pole position. The goal will be to stay first just until the finish.”

Victor Martins (R-ace GP) : “It wasn’t really a battle with Charles, but I could stay with him and he did a good job to hold me off. He is my team mate, so I did not want to try something crazy. Starting third, I knew it would be hard to overtake, but I tried to pour on the pressure just until the finish. In the end, I finished third and claimed my first podium. It is great and even more so being Monaco ! Tomorrow, I will be on the lookout for any opportunity. I noticed Yifei’s pace wasn’t that good at the start. Maybe there is something to take advantage of to score another podium result.”
