Hurgon and the Trophy-R return to Nürburgring as part of the latest R.S. Days
Laurent Hurgon and the record-breaking, all-new Mégane R.S. Trophy-R returned to the scene of one of their two great 2019 triumphs last weekend – the Nürburgring where the now-legendary pairing recorded a new FWD lap record on the challenging Nordschleife with a time of 7:40.100 minutes.
The pair were appearing in Germany as part of the latest R.S. Days event which took place at the popular Grand Prix circuit on Saturday August 31 and Sunday September 1. Hurgon took the car for a spin at the very same venue where they recorded the triumphant lap in May, and then took time out to sign autographs and appear in numerous selfies with R.S. fans.
The R.S. Trophy-R proved a great hit elsewhere at the event – held against the background of a series of Formula Renault races – thanks to New Mégane R.S. Trophy-R workshops where different parts of the car and different accessories, including Alcantara seats, were displayed for all to see.
In breaks from action on the track, R.S. owners got to parade their own cars and take part in two 20-minute track sessions held on the morning and afternoon of both days – giving them a real feel for professional racing in one of racing’s most historic settings.
Fans also got to see a number of other legendary R.S. classics, including the Clio R.S. III, Clio R.S. IV, Clio II V6, Renault Spider, Mégane R.S. III, Mégane R.S. IV and Mégane R.S. Trophy, as well as the current F1 display car. Talks included F1 workshops with a team engineer and there was the opportunity to pay a trackside visit to the R.S. team taking part in the Formula Renault races. Elsewhere, visitors got the chance to try their hand at driving simulators, test their reflexes on a Batak reaction test board and pick up merchandise from the R.S. Performance stand. A cocktail party on the Saturday gave owners, visitors and the R.S. team the chance to mingle and talk about their favourite passion : Renault Sport.
However, as the news of the tragic death of Anthoine Hubert at Spa Francorchamps came in, a sad shadow fell over the day. On Sunday, after the previous day’s glorious sunshine, even the weather turned sombre as the loss of the young BWT-Arden F2 driver and member of the Renault Sport Academy sank in.
At 4pm, Renault Sport Series members and R.S. Days visitors stood for a minute’s silence to pay tribute to this brilliant young driver.
RIP Anthoine. You will be sorely missed.
